Joan
On his birthday two years ago, my grandfather told his audience that the most important thing we could give him is time. Time spent together is the most meaningful gift, as it demonstrates that the recipient is a priority amongst all other things. In a year unlike any other, my grandfather suffered the loss of his wife of 55 years and his lifelong brother. Unforseeable events this year meant that our family was unable to spend our much-needed time together. Instead, I took to the shop in attempts to somehow create a gift that my grandfather truly deserved. A lifelong waterman and craftsman, I knew that he would appreciate the gesture, the product, and above all, the time dedicated to the craft. Named after my grandmother, Joan is a 12'6" Cedar Strip Canoe made from white and red cedar, ash, and brass.
